Am I the only one who thinks you can cut off family without a big blowup fight?
I see two camps on this. One says you need a dramatic event, a final text, a slammed door. The other says you can just slowly stop showing up and let the calls go to voicemail. I did the quiet version with my dad after he skipped my son's 4th birthday party in Tulsa and never gave a reason, and 2 years later he still tells people we just drifted apart. Which way is more honest, the loud ending or the fade out? I honestly can't decide if silence counts as closure or just avoiding the fight.
Your dad skipped a 4 year old's birthday party and then told people you drifted? That would make me so mad, because drifting apart is something that happens to both people, not something one person does while the other one waits for a reason that never comes. The quiet way probably is more honest for your own peace, but he gets to rewrite the story in his favor, and that part would eat at me.
