Chose my brother's wedding over my best friend's cross-country move, still not sorry
Last June my best friend of 12 years asked me to drive with her from Denver to Portland to help her settle in. Same weekend my brother announced his small backyard wedding in Ohio. I picked the wedding, told her I could help her pack the week before instead. She said, quote, "you always pick family over me" and stopped returning my calls. Has anyone else lost a close friend just for choosing a sibling's big day over a moving trip that could've happened any other weekend?
Two weddings in one summer did it for me, actually. My cousin's in June and my college roommate's in August, and I picked the cousin because blood is blood, you know. She sent me a long text about how I never show up for her "big moments" and that was that. It's like some friendships have this unspoken rule that you have to prove you care every single time, and one miss means you're out. But honestly, in my 40s I've noticed people collect slights like trading cards. They keep score on who showed up to what, and it just eats the whole thing alive.
