Cut off my best friend of 12 years after one text message

She sent me a screenshot of a private conversation I had with her about my divorce. Shared it with our whole group chat without asking. How do you trust someone again after they break that boundary?

Oh man, "how do you trust someone again" really hits home. I had this friend once who shared something I told her in confidence about my mom's health issues to her whole family at a holiday dinner without asking. I found out through her cousin's Facebook post. It wasn't malicious or anything, she just thought it was "helpful" for everyone to know. But it broke something in me. I get it, that feeling of realizing the person you trusted the most sees your privacy as optional. I kept her at a distance for a while and eventually we talked it out, but the friendship was never the same. That kind of boundary break leaves a mark, you know?

Yeah, "sees your privacy as optional" is exactly it. I had a buddy who thought it was fine to tell people how much debt I was in because he figured it'd get me sympathy at a party.

I wonder if part of why it stings so much is that she didn't even think to ask first, which means she never really saw what you shared as yours to control in the first place.
