I told myself I'd never talk to my brother again. Then I spent 6 hours stuck without jumper cables.
Had a huge blowout with my older brother Jake about 18 months ago over how he handled our mom's estate stuff. I said I was done, burned that bridge completely. Then last Tuesday my car battery died in the parking lot of the Kroger on Elm Street. I sat there for 45 minutes waiting for roadside assistance and they never showed up. Jake happened to pull in for groceries, saw me, and walked over without saying a word. He popped his hood, pulled out cables, and had me jumped in less than 10 minutes. We didn't talk about the fight, just nodded at each other. Has anyone else had a situation where a simple everyday thing made you rethink a burned bridge?

Wait, didn't your mom pass away like 3 years ago, not 18 months?

I read somewhere that family has a way of showing up when you least expect it, even after everything falls apart. Sometimes it just takes a dead battery to remind you what actually matters.

Honestly, I feel a little called out right now because my dead battery moment involved me locking my keys in the car at a grocery store parking lot. My cousin drove an hour to bring me the spare, and I cried harder than when I failed my driver's test the first time. It's funny how a stupid little crisis makes you realize who actually cares about you. Ngl, I half expected her to just send a tow truck and a bill, but she showed up with coffee and a lecture about my life choices. Sometimes family hits you right in the gut when you're ready to give up on them. Tbh, the battery dying was probably karma for ignoring her calls for two months.
