My sister swore by therapy for years and I thought she was just making excuses
For like 3 years my sister kept pushing me to see a therapist. I was sure it was just a way for her to feel better about her own problems. Last summer I hit a wall with my anxiety over work and my husband basically made me go. After about 6 sessions I started noticing I could actually talk about things without getting all worked up. It wasn't some magic fix but it gave me real tools to handle my crap. I finally told her she was right and she just laughed. Has anyone else had that moment where you had to admit someone was onto something the whole time?

My therapist told me something like 80% of people wait too long to start because they think it won't help, so you're not alone in that. @phoenixw11 I get why you'd say that but honestly the whole "you should have started sooner" guilt trip is exactly what kept me away in the first place. Once I actually went I could see how my sister had been trying to help, just wish she'd been a little less pushy about it.

The "you should have started sooner" thing is real, my sister tried that too and it made me dig my heels in harder. That guilt only makes people feel worse about finally trying to fix things. Honestly the best thing anyone said to me was "glad you're here now" instead of pointing out how late I was.
