Rented a storage unit for my ex's stuff and it sat there 8 months

My ex moved out in January but left a bunch of boxes in the garage. I told her she had 30 days to pick them up or I'd toss them. She kept making excuses so I rented a small unit for $45 a month and moved everything there. Gave her the key and the address. She never went. After 8 months I stopped paying and the unit got auctioned off. That was the moment I stopped letting her string me along. Has anyone else just cut the cord on leftover relationship stuff like that?

Yeah that's a brutal one but honestly this is just how we treat people in general these days. We pay for their lack of effort and make excuses for them like it's normal behavior. Think about it - how many people do you know who keep paying for gym memberships they never use, storage units full of junk, or subscriptions to services they forgot about? It's the same thing. We'd rather keep throwing money at a problem than admit it was a mistake in the first place. At least you finally woke up. Most people just keep paying forever.

Actually it was 8 months of storage fees you paid, not 8 months of her stringing you along.

honestly I feel you on this one, sometimes you just gotta draw a line in the sand for your own peace of mind. paying for that unit month after month must've felt like a constant reminder of the past hanging over your head. good on you for finally letting it go and moving on.
