The week I cut off my brother for good after 30 years of nonsense
Last June I finally ended things with my older brother after he showed up drunk to my daughter's wedding and made a scene at the reception. He spilled red wine on her dress and told the groom's mom that our family had money problems. I told him to leave and haven't spoken to him since. The next three days were weirdly peaceful, like I could finally breathe. Has anyone else had a family member pull something at a big event that made you walk away for good?

@janah83 Right? My FRIEND had a brother ruin her kid's baptism, total nightmare. @seth_singh20 hit the nail on the head.

Honestly I used to think cutting off family was too harsh no matter what. But reading about him showing up drunk to your daughter's wedding and spilling wine on her dress, that's just... I get it now. Some people don't change and you can't keep letting them ruin important moments. That peaceful feeling you had says everything.

Mention that people often forget the cost isnt just one big blowup like the wedding. Its the constant low level anxiety before every holiday, every birthday, every phone call. You spend weeks bracing yourself for the next disaster instead of looking forward to life. That wedding dress moment was the breaking point, sure, but the years of walking on eggshells beforehand take a heavier toll. Cutting someone off isnt always about one terrible act. Its about finally putting down a weight you didnt realize you were carrying.
