Unpopular opinion: cutting off my cousin over a $20 bet was the best move I made in 2023

He kept pushing me to bet on the Super Bowl but I said no three times. Then he called me a coward in front of my family so I finally snapped and told him we were done. I blocked his number after he tried to guilt me with a text saying 'blood is thicker than water.' It's been 8 months and honestly my holidays are way less stressful without his drama. Has anyone else dropped a relative over something that seemed small but was really about respect?

Well, I read a study once that said boundaries make relationships better, so good for you.

Saw a podcast once where they said boundaries only work if both people agree on them first.

Hear me out on this one. I used to think boundaries were the secret to everything too, but then I realized sometimes they just push people further apart. In my experience, a lot of those studies are done in perfect lab conditions that don't match real life. Your mileage may vary, but I've seen more relationships get torn apart by rigid boundaries than get helped by them. I'm not saying they're all bad, just that it's not a one-size-fits-all thing.
