Hit 10,000 steaks trimmed this morning and it got weird
I've been keeping a little tally in my notebook for the last 4 years, just for fun. After cutting up a whole ribeye primal this morning, I counted up and realized I hit exactly 10,000 individual steaks trimmed. Felt like I should have a ceremony or something, but instead I just swept up the scraps. Anyone else keep random counts of stuff like this or am I the only one with a weird tally habit?

...and that weird feeling, was it more of a "what now" kind of emptiness or a real sense of accomplishment? Because hitting a number like that, especially after 4 years of just casually keeping track, it messes with your head a bit. I get that counting stuff as you go is its own kind of meditation, like you're building something invisible while doing the same damn thing over and over. But when you finally look up and see the tally, it hits different. So what was the main thing going through your mind when you swept up those scraps - relief, pride, or just the thought of the next 10,000?

Did you feel like you finally proved something to yourself or just checked a box?

That whole thing echoes something I've noticed about hobbies and projects in general. You spend years focused on the doing part, the process, and then the goal shows up like a surprise party you planned for yourself. The number becomes almost like a side effect of just showing up day after day. It’s like when i finally finished painting my garage after three summers of on and off work, standing there with the last brush in my hand felt hollow for a second. Thats the part nobody tells you about, once the counting stops you have to figure out what the next reason to show up is.
