Hit 5000 pounds of trim waste in a month and had to sit down
So last week I finally added up all my trim waste from October and it came to 5032 pounds. Thats a lot of fat and silver skin and scrap that I just toss. Honestly it caught me off guard because I never really think about it until I see the total. I run a small shop in Portland and do mostly custom cuts for local farms so the volume adds up quick. The number made me wonder if I should be saving more of that fat for rendering or selling to pet food places. I already give bones to a local guy who makes broth but the rest just goes in the dumpster. Has anyone else here tracked their waste numbers and found a way to actually make money off it instead of just tossing it?

Bartering fat sounds nice but soap makers want clean fat and mine's mixed with silver skin.

...and then I sat down too, because 5000 pounds is basically the weight of a small car made of wasted money. @oliverhernandez, I wish I had a soap maker to barter with, but my fat always looks like it went through a paper shredder with extra silver skin bits mixed in. I've definitely had that moment where you add it all up and realize you're throwing away more than some shops sell in a month. Honestly I bet if we both pooled our scrap fat we could nearly fill a bathtub, which is a weird mental image but here we are. The pet food angle sounds promising though, maybe I should look into that before my dumpster starts charging me rent.
