Spent $400 on a band saw blade sharpener that barely worked

Bought one of those tabletop sharpener units off a supplier's catalog about 8 months ago. Figured I'd save money long term by sharpening my own blades instead of sending them out. First blade I tried got all wavy and threw the teeth off by a mile, ruined a $60 cut. Second attempt was just as bad, teeth chipped on the first pass. Ended up spending more on ruined blades than I would have just paying for sharpening service. Anyone else tried these sharpeners and had the same luck?

Did you check if the sharpener's alignment was actually square to the blade? I messed around with mine for 3 hours before I realized the guide plate was off by like 2 degrees from the factory. Had to shim it with some business cards to get it straight after that the results were way better. Still not perfect but at least it stopped trashing blades.

Sounds like you bought a pricey paperweight and a blade destroyer all in one.

Man the amount of times I've just stared at a sharpener like it personally offended me is unreal lol. My first one I must have shimmed with enough random junk to build a small shed - business cards, beer coasters, a piece of cereal box. Finally got it close enough that it only ruins every other blade instead of every single one. Progress, right? I swear these things are designed to test your patience more than your knives.
