TIL a dull boning knife is more dangerous than a sharp one

Had a nasty slip last Tuesday trimming silverskin off a top round. Took 6 stitches at urgent care and lost a whole afternoon of work. I was trying to save 5 minutes by not stopping to sharpen. That was dumb. The cut was clean but deep. How often do you guys actually stop and touch up your edges mid shift?

Stabbed myself in the palm last month because I was too lazy to hit the stones.

Man I read that and winced. @daniel140 that's a REAL bad way to learn a lesson. I've got a scar on my thumb from trying to open a paint can with a screwdriver when I was 18. Blood everywhere, had to get four stitches. But a whole palm stab? That's NEXT LEVEL. Hope you at least got a good tetanus shot out of the deal and didn't lose any finger movement. You probably think twice now before you take shortcuts with sharp objects though, right?

Man that palm stab story made me cringe. I got in the habit of running my knife over a ceramic rod every time I come back from break and it saved me a lot of pain. Five seconds of touch ups beats five hours in urgent care waiting room any day.

Right, the whole "running it over a ceramic rod" thing is actually a good habit, but you're supposed to do it before it gets dull, not just on breaks. @avery_jackson, if you're only touching up after a break, you might be missing the small nicks that cause slips later. A quick strop every hour or so really does make a difference for keeping an edge safe (and your palm intact).
