Vent: I swapped my usual boning knife for a $15 Victorinox filet knife on a whole hog last week and it actually worked BETTER for the delicate rib work.

Has anyone else had a weirdly good result using a tool that's technically for a different job?

Sometimes the cheap tool is just the right tool.

Read an article once about how cheap tools can be perfect for one-off jobs (like max_torres44 said). They mentioned those basic plastic putty knives you get for a few bucks. If you're just spackling one hole in a wall, buying the fancy metal one is overkill. The cheap one works fine and you don't feel bad tossing it if the job gets messy.
