Certification courses: $500 for a PMP exam prep that landed me a raise vs $300 for a coding bootcamp that taught me nothing new

I'm torn on whether paying big for credentials is worth it. Last year I dropped $500 on a PMP exam prep course including the test fee, and it got me a promotion within 3 months. But before that I spent $300 on a weekend coding bootcamp for Python and it was just YouTube videos I could have watched for free. Now I'm looking at a $1,200 data analytics certificate, and I'm not sure if it's another trap or a legit career move. Did you get burned by an expensive course, or did one actually pay off? What's the line between useful training and a cash grab?

“A pricey piece of paper” yeah that’s exactly what my first cert was, a Python course that basically just taught me how to Google stuff I already knew.

Ngl I just read somewhere that the real money in certs comes from ones tied to a specific industry or role, not general skill builders. Like the PMP worked because it’s a standard hiring checkbox in project management. But a random coding bootcamp? Probably just someone repackaging free content. That $1,200 data analytics cert better have a recognized name on it or actual job placement stats, otherwise it’s just a pricey piece of paper. Tbh I’d check if the course provider is partnered with actual companies before dropping that kind of cash again.
