Got burned by a bad hire last month and it cost me a big job
Hired a guy named Mike off a rec from a buddy. He talked a big game but couldn't even set a ladder straight. Lost a $4,000 residential roof job in Portland because he left a leak. How do you actually vet someone's skills before you put them on a crew?

Can't believe he left a leak. That's like basic stuff you learn your first week roofing. Did you check his references or just take your buddy's word for it?

Well now, I don't know about that. A leak can be a pretty small thing sometimes, just a seam that wasn't sealed right or a nail that missed. Stuff like that can happen even to good roofers on a bad day. Not saying it's fine, but calling it a total failure of basic skills feels harsh to me, @grays13. I've seen guys who've been roofing for twenty years make a mistake on a tricky valley or around a chimney. The real question is how he handled it after he found out. Did he come back and fix it without making a fuss? That matters a lot more than the first mistake.

Right, because nobody ever had a bad day in their life. I guess the first thing they teach you in roofing school is how to be perfect every single time, all the time, with no exceptions. Must've missed that class where they covered "Never ever ever have a nail pop on a hot afternoon when the shingles are soft as butter." But sure, let's burn the guy at the stake for one leak, I'm sure his flawless replacement will be knocking on your door next week to do your next roof for half the price.
