My old boss told me to never accept a counter offer. I ignored him and took one. Now I'm trying to figure out if he was right.

Oh man, this is such a classic trap. It's like when you're at a store and see something you want, then suddenly the store puts a "sale" sign on it so you buy it even though you didn't really need it. Companies do the same thing with counter offers. They wait until you're about to leave to suddenly offer you more money or perks, when they could have done that the whole time. It's less about valuing you and more about avoiding the hassle of replacing you. Most times, the trust is already broken and you'll be out the door within a year anyway.
