My old manager said quit LinkedIn and network locally, was he right?

Back in 2018 my boss at a retail chain in Phoenix told me to stop wasting time on LinkedIn and just talk to people at industry meetups. I ignored him for a year, applied to 40 online jobs, got nothing but auto-replies. Then I tried his way, went to 3 local events, and got 2 interviews from people I actually talked to. But now everything is remote and virtual, so is local networking even still a thing or was he just lucky with timing? I'm curious if anyone else got advice that felt outdated but actually worked later.
