Showerthought: Skipping office small talk held back my job progress.
I missed out on a project lead role because bosses didn't know my skills. Now I chat by the coffee machine, and it's helped me get noticed.

My friend Pete in accounting got passed over for a senior spot twice. He was the best with spreadsheets but just ate lunch at his desk. He finally started joking about his bad commute with the department head. A week later she asked for his help on a budget model, and now he runs that team.

Disagree with how this story is framed. Pete's spreadsheet skills should have gotten him promoted without the small talk. I've seen too many quiet experts get overlooked because they don't play the social game. It's frustrating when office chatter counts more than actual talent.

Can you lead a team without talking to them?

Sometimes that office chatter is how people learn to trust each other. For example, if Pete never talks, others might think he's not a team player. When he shared about his commute, it showed he's human and approachable. That made his boss see him as someone she could rely on for bigger tasks. So his spreadsheet skills got noticed because he became more visible. It's less about games and more about connecting.
