Spent $200 on a "career coaching" course that was basically a guy reading LinkedIn posts out loud

Honestly, I fell for one of those Instagram ads promising to land me a remote job in two weeks. Paid $200 for a course called "The Digital Nomad Blueprint" and it was just a dude named Mark reading 10 articles about optimizing your profile. Wasted a full Saturday watching the videos and ended up with the same advice my buddy gave me for free. Has anyone else gotten burned by one of these online career gurus and actually found something that worked?

A buddy of mine from my old neighborhood dropped $150 on a "LinkedIn Masterclass" that promised to get him noticed by recruiters. He watched six hours of videos and the main tip was to put a banner photo of yourself looking at a laptop in a coffee shop. The guy running the course even admitted halfway through that he'd never actually worked a remote job himself. My friend ended up just asking his cousin who works in HR what to do and got hired within a month.

Oh man, I have to share something similar that happened to my cousin. She bought a course called "The Executive Presence Accelerator" or something like that, and half of it was just videos of the guy talking about his expensive watch collection (like, who cares?). The other half was him reading off a script about how to nod during Zoom calls to look more professional. She said the biggest takeaway was to take off your pajama pants before a video interview which, I mean, that's common sense. So she gave up on it and just started following a random TikTok creator who actually works in HR, and that's where she got real tips about negotiating salary and stuff. Sorry you went through that with your guy too, it's so frustrating when you pay good money for what ends up being a waste of a Saturday.
