That one piece of advice from my uncle about never taking a counter offer...

Back in 2018, I was about to quit my job in Cleveland and my uncle told me to never accept a counter offer because they'll just replace you later. I didn't listen, took the raise, and sure enough they laid me off 4 months after I turned down the new gig. Has anyone else had that happen or did I just get unlucky?

Oh man, that SUCKS. I had the exact same thing happen to me back in 2015 when I was working at a marketing firm in Chicago. My boss begged me to stay when I put in my notice, threw a 20% raise at me, and I thought I was being smart by taking it... but I knew something felt off. Six months later they restructured my whole department and I was the first one out the door. It's like they just bought themselves time to find my replacement, you know? Your uncle was right, unfortunately. I don't think it's just bad luck, I think most companies do this because they get offended you tried to leave in the first place.
