Took the $5k course instead of the free mentorship, big mistake
I paid for a 6 week certification program with a career coach in Austin, but my friend's buddy offered free guidance that covered the exact same material. Now I'm $5k lighter and still job hunting, has anyone else gotten burned by paying for what networking gives you for free?

Did you check if the course had a refund policy before you signed up? I got hit with a similar thing a few years back with a "resume secrets" workshop that was literally just the same stuff my old coworker showed me over coffee. What actually helped me was taking the materials from the course and turning them into a simple checklist, then I asked two people in my field to grill me on it. Networking gives you the inside track, but paid stuff sometimes forces you to actually sit down and do the work, which is the real trap. If you're still job hunting, try flipping it: use what you learned to help someone else in your network, it makes the info stick way better than just reading it.
