Went to a networking event in Cleveland and nobody was actually talking

I showed up at this mixer downtown last week, paid $25 for a ticket, and everyone was just standing around looking at their phones. Like, there was a whole room of people in suits and nobody wanted to make the first move. I ended up chatting with the bartender for 20 minutes just to have someone to talk to. Has anyone else been to one of these things where it feels like nobody knows how to start a conversation anymore?

Honestly sounds like everyone paid $25 for the privilege of staring at their phones in a nicer room.

Right, the whole thing was basically paying cover charge to watch people scroll through Instagram in a slightly fancier chair. Saw at least three tables where nobody talked for a solid twenty minutes, just passing phones back and forth like some kind of digital show-and-tell. The bartender even had to ask a group to put theirs down so he could take their drink order, which felt about right for the whole vibe.

Man, that's exactly what happened at one I went to last month.
