Why I stopped ignoring exit interviews after my last one backfired hard

I blew off an exit interview at a dealership in Detroit last year, just said 'everything's fine' and walked out. Six months later my old boss called me for a reference check and I found out they told the new place I was 'unreliable' because I never gave real feedback. Now I treat exit interviews like a chance to set the record straight, not just a waste of time. Has anyone else gotten burned by being too quiet when they left a job?

Ugh, yeah, that's rough. I always figured exit interviews were just HR going through the motions, not ammo for future reference checks. That's a brutal lesson to learn the hard way. I mean I used to think exit interviews were pointless too but your story actually makes me reconsider. Maybe it's smart to use them as a chance to control the narrative instead of just ghosting.
