Crown molding outside corners ate my whole Saturday, anyone else waste a day on this?

Tried to do a simple crown install in a bedroom outside Dallas and the outside corners just would not cooperate. First corner I cut with my miter saw at 45 and it left a gap you could fit a dime in. Spent like 3 hours fiddling with bevel angles and the corner block trick before I gave up and used caulk. Then the second corner, I flipped the board upside down like the old timers say, but my crown has a spring angle of 38 degrees so that made it worse. Took me from 8am to almost 5pm total, and I still think one corner looks off if you stare at it. Is there a way to nail these things without a cope cut or am I just overthinking it?

The bubble wrap trick ate my finish, but the video I followed blamed my technique

Last month I watched a guy online wrap his router bit in bubble wrap to catch dust on a plunge cut. He made it look so easy, like 2 minutes of setup. I tried it on a walnut shelf for a client in Austin, the bit grabbed the wrap and shredded it into these sticky chunks that melted into the grain. I spent 4 hours sanding that mess out and had to refinish the whole piece. I know dust control is a thing, but has anyone actually got that hack to work? Or is it just a trap for anyone who doesn't have a vacuum setup?

Found out my grandfather's hand plane was hiding a 1923 date under the rust

I mean, I've been cleaning up old tools for a while now, but last weekend I finally got around to restoring this Stanley No. 4 that's been sitting in my garage for like 5 years. After a vinegar bath and some serious wire brushing, the lateral adjustment lever had this faint stamp that just appeared. Took a magnifying glass and sure enough it said 1923 right there. Apparently the patent date on the plane body doesn't always match the manufacturing year, you gotta look for the batch code on the lever itself. I looked it up online and this specific version had a corrugated sole that they only made for a couple years in the early 20s. My grandpa never mentioned it to me, he just said it was his dad's old scraper. Has anyone else discovered something wild like that hidden under years of rust on a vintage tool? I'm curious if I should actually use this thing or just hang it on the wall now.

The lumberyard load test that changed my beam sizing

Last month at the 84 Lumber in Dayton I watched a guy argue with the yard manager about a 20 foot LVL beam. The manager grabbed two sawhorses and a sandbag, set the beam up and loaded it to spec right there in the lot. It bowed way more than the guy expected, and he walked away grabbing a bigger size. I started doing quick deflection checks on my own jobs since then, even small ones like headers over 6 foot openings. Anyone else test materials before trusting the stamped numbers?

Last week I found out my chalk line was 30 years old and still works fine

I was cleaning out my van in the shop lot on Tuesday and found a chalk line my dad gave me when I started apprenticing in 1995. It's the red Stanley with the worn handle, and I figured I'd retired it years ago. I loaded it with fresh chalk, snapped a line across a sheet of plywood, and it was dead straight, no wobble. My helper laughed and said why buy a new laser when the old stuff just keeps going. Anyone else hold onto older tools that outwork the newer ones?

Took a shortcut on crown molding for a closet in Denver, never again

Last month I had a quick closet job on a remodel over in Lakewood, and I thought I could just cope the inside corners by eye like I've done a dozen times. Big mistake. The first piece looked okay until I held it up and there was a gap you could slide a nickel through. I ended up having to recut all four corners with my coping saw, which took an extra hour and a half. Honestly, the old guy I learned from always told me to cut the profile first, then undercut it at 45 degrees, but I got lazy and went straight to the coping cut. Compare that to the bathroom I did with my regular process, perfect seams, zero caulk needed, done in half the time. Has anyone else tried skipping the 45 degree back cut and regretted it, or am I just the only stubborn one?

Bought a $600 laser level, used my old string line and got the same result

Last month I dropped 600 on a fancy green beam self leveling unit because I thought my work would get faster. Spent a whole day reading the manual, charging batteries, figuring out the mount. Then I had to do a simple cabinet run in a kitchen in Tacoma. Grabbed my old nylon string and a 4 foot level, had it all marked out in 20 minutes. The laser is still in the box. I bet I'll use it twice a year. Has anyone else bought expensive gear that just sits there while the cheap stuff does the job?

TIL the hard way about mixing sawdust types in my shop vac filter

I threw some MDF dust in with my usual pine and oak sawdust in the same vacuum bag last week, and then tried cleaning out the filter with compressed air. That MDF stuff clumped up like glue and plugged the pleats so bad the motor sounded like it was dying. Took me 45 minutes with a brush and a hose to get it moderately usable again. Now I keep a separate cheap vac for anything with glue in it, no question. Anyone else run into this with particle board or is it just me?

Talked to an old framer about layout nails, wish I had earlier

I was on a job near Tacoma last week and an older framer, must be 60 plus, saw me snapping lines for a wall layout. He asked why I was using a chalk line when a few well placed 16d nails in the subfloor would do the same thing. At first I thought he was joking, but he showed me how he sets his long walls with a string pulled tight between two nails, no chalk dust to blow away or snap crooked. It hit me different because I've spent 7 years overcomplicating layouts with lasers and chalk when the simple method is faster and just as accurate on a clean floor. Anyone else switch to that method, or do you still stick with the chalk line for speed?

Rant: Stop treating a 2x4 like it's precision equipment

I got handed a print for a deck last week that called for cutting every joist to the 32nd of an inch. It's a pressure treated 2x6, it's gonna move a quarter inch by next spring anyway. I cut to the line and it fit fine, the architect can measure the gap with his laser if he's bored. Anyone else get specs that are way tighter than the material actually allows?

Pro tip: laser level batteries die at the worst possible moment

Last Thursday I was setting up a full wall of shelving in a client's garage in Tacoma. Got the first bracket up, checked it with my old manual level, looked perfect. Went to shoot a line across the whole wall and nothing. Dead batteries. I had zero spares in the truck. So I did the whole 16 foot run with a 4 foot level and a chalk line, moving it over and over. Took me 40 minutes that should have taken 5. Never again. Do you carry spare batteries for every tool or just the one that breaks you?

The plywood shelf sag lesson from that Habitat build in Tulsa

Last month at a Habitat for Humanity build in Tulsa, one of the older guys pointed at a sagging 3/4 inch shelf I'd just hung and said 'you forgot the middle support, kid', and now I always add a center cleat on anything over 36 inches wide, has anyone else had a shelf fail that way or do you just double up the ply?

Old timer at the lumber yard corrected my stud spacing logic

Last Friday I was loading up 2x4s at the yard in Dayton and this retired framer watches me grab extra studs for a 12 foot wall. He asks why I'm buying 8 when the plans call for 6, and I told him I always add a couple for warped lumber. He laughed and said he used to do the same until he realized he was paying for his own anxiety. I was irritated for a second but checked my depth and yeah, I was sinking the heads almost a quarter inch into the studs. I always set it by feel and never really thought about it. He came back later and showed me how he sets his depth with a scrap piece, one quick shot, then adjusts so the head sits just flush or a hair proud. Saves sanding time later and keeps the wood from splitting around the nail. I've been doing it that way for about 3 weeks now and it feels way more solid. Appreciation post: the apprentice who questioned my scribe cuts at 4pm yesterday

The kid asked why I was cutting crown molding flush against the jamb instead of coping the back edge, and after I grumbled through the explanation about time vs. the five extra minutes it'd take to do it right, I realized he was just repeating what my old foreman told me in 2011, so now I'm going to start coping every joint, even the ones behind cabinets, and has anyone else had a junior call them out on a habit they knew was wrong?

Framing square markings are lying to you if you ignore the tongue

I watched a guy on a site outside Boise layout a whole stair stringer using just the body of his framing square, then wonder why every rise came out a hair off. The 24 inch marks and the table on the tongue exist for a reason, but most people I see never flip it over or even look at the rafter tables. I've been doing this 12 years and once I started double checking both sets of numbers, my cuts lined up so much better. Anyone else notice this trend with younger guys treating the square like a straight edge only?

Am I the only one who thinks cutting crown flat is faster than coping inside corners?

I spent 3 hours last Saturday trying to cope an inside corner for a kitchen job in Elmira. Finally gave up and cut it flat against the fence with a 45 on both pieces. Fit perfect in 20 minutes. Coping takes skill but for standard joint compound walls, does it even matter? I get that older houses need it, but new construction with drywall mud seems like a waste of time. Who else skips the coping saw and just goes flat? Does your boss care?
