A job site demo on a floating subfloor changed my nailing habits

I used to swear by my 15 gauge finish nailer for everything, even base shoe and quarter round. Last month I was on a remodel in Portland where the homeowner had this old house with serious floor movement. The GC walked over and showed me how my nails were already backing out of the subfloor, because they weren't long enough to bite into the joists below the 3/4 inch plywood and the 1/2 inch underlayment. He handed me a box of 2 inch 16 gauge pins and said, angle them like this, into the tongue, and trust the glue. I spent the next two hours redoing a whole hallway that I'd finished the day before. That experience pushed me to check subfloor thickness on every single job now, and I keep both nail sizes in the truck. Has anyone else had a fastener failure that made you rethink your go-to setup for trim work?

Man, nothing like redoing your own work to really cement a lesson in your brain. That GC probably saved you from a callback that woulda been way more painful than two hours in a hallway.
