Cracked oak? My drill bit fix ended the splitting for good.

Pre-drilling stops splits before they start, simple as that.

Cameron's point about dry oak having internal stress is spot on. That brittleness means the wood can fracture along hidden weak points, no matter how careful you drill. One thing that helps is to drill a pilot hole, then gradually step up the bit size before the final screw. Another tip is to rub a little soap on the screw threads to cut down on friction when driving it in.

Honestly, saying pre-drilling stops splits before they start isn't always true. Tbh, if the oak is already dry or has internal stress, it can still split even with pre-drilling. You gotta match the drill bit size to the screw, and sometimes use a pilot hole that's a bit smaller. I've seen splits happen when people rush or use dull bits.

Check the wood grain direction too, that stress Cameron mentioned shows up more along certain lines. Sometimes you pick a different spot on the board or even a different board altogether.

Tell me about it. I learned the hard way that pre-drilling is not a magic spell. My first big project was an oak bench, and I was so proud of my careful pilot holes. Still heard that awful cracking sound. Turns out my drill bit was older than my sense of patience. Rushing and a dull bit will betray you every time.
