Had a talk with an old union carpenter last week that flipped my thinking on layout marks
He noticed I was using a sharpie for all my marks instead of a pencil and said 'you're burning your tolerances before you even cut' - never thought about how the line width alone could throw off a fit by a 16th. Anyone else switched up their marking method after a comment like that?

My old framing partner used to yell at me for using a fat carpenter pencil on everything, said I was "drawing blueprints instead of cutting wood." Switched over to a mechanical pencil with .5mm lead for layout and it feels weird at first but man does it make a difference when you're trying to nail a tight joint. The sharpie thing hits different though because that ink bleeds into the grain too, so even if you cut right on the line you're still losing a hair. Makes you wonder how many other little habits we've picked up that are just burning accuracy without us even realizing it.

Used to roll my eyes at guys who got real specific about their marking tools, figured close enough was good enough. But last month I was cutting some cabinet parts and kept missing my lines by that tiny bit, ended up with a gap on a face frame that drove me nuts. Had to recut three pieces because the Sharpie line was just thick enough to throw off my measurements when it bled into the oak. Changed to a fine tip mechanical pencil after that and the difference in accuracy is ridiculous, never going back.
