I had to redo a whole deck because of one bad joist hanger
Last month I was building a deck for a client in Austin, and I nailed in all the joist hangers without checking they were the right size. Three rows in, I realized the hangers were for 2x8s, but the joists were 2x10s. Tried to make it work with a shim, but the whole thing looked off and felt wrong. I tore out every hanger, spent an extra $60 on new ones, and added two days to the job. Has anyone else had a supplier mix up hardware on a big order?

That extra $60 stings but at least you caught it before the deck collapsed (which would have cost way more).

Ha, yeah that's exactly what happened with my old porch back in 2019. Paid an extra $80 for a second beam because the inspector said the original one was splitting. Felt like throwing money away at the time but a year later a big storm came through and that beam was the only thing holding up the roof. Guess who's glad they spent that extra $80 now? Me, that's who. Sometimes being paranoid about the house collapsing pays off.
