Just realized that whole week in July was a disaster waiting to happen

I was framing out a basement in a 1950s house near downtown, and every single corner was off by at least 3/8 of an inch because the foundation settled years ago. Took me five days to shim and scribe everything just to get closets to square up. You guys ever run into a house where the builder clearly just eyeballed the whole thing?

Laser level was a lifesaver when I was in a similar spot. Had to measure off the highest corner in each room and work backwards from there.

The highest corner trick is smart. Last time I tried hanging shelves I ended up with a row that slanted downhill like a ski slope. Had to redo the whole thing and my wife still brings it up at dinner parties. Laser levels are great until the battery dies halfway through and you're eyeballing it like a caveman. Borrowed my neighbor's once and he wanted it back before I even finished marking the studs. Now I just buy my own and hide the receipt so she doesn't see how much they cost.

Oh man, that's usually how it goes. You think you're being smart saving money by borrowing stuff, but then you end up buying it anyway plus wasting time. It's funny how the cheap route almost always costs more in the long run, whether it's tools or just about anything else.
