My old foreman told me to stop measuring twice and I told him he was nuts
Back in 2016 I was framing a garage in Boise and my foreman Dale kept watching me measure every board twice. He finally said "kid, measure once, cut long, and trim it to fit, you're burning time." I thought he was just lazy. Then we hit a wall where the slab was 3/8 inch out of square and my double measured cuts were all off anyway. Now I cut a hair long and sneak up on the line with a block plane, and it saves me maybe 20 minutes a day. Anybody else's old timer give them grief that turned out to be right?
Dale was right. Wood moves, slabs move, nothing in a house is actually square. I cut everything a 16th long now and trim it in place. Saves me way more than measuring ever did.
