Old timer told me my coping was sloppy and I got defensive at first
I had a guy with 40 years in the trade watch me cope a baseboard for a bathroom remodel in Nashville. He straight up said my technique was going to leave gaps that caulk couldn't fix. I almost snapped back but then he showed me how he angles the saw 3 degrees different and uses a file for the final pass. Tried his method on the next three joints and they came out tighter than anything I ever did. Idk why I thought my way was fine after just 5 years of doing this. Has anyone else had an older carpenter call out something you thought you had down?

The 3 degree angle trick is solid but a lot of guys miss that the file work matters just as much. I had a 30 year veteran show me how he uses a half round file to knock off the sharp back edge of the cope cut. Makes the joint sit flat without that tiny gap on the back side. Your old timer was right about the saw angle but he probably left out that you gotta account for the wall being out of plumb by running the shoe at a slight tilt too.
