Saw a zero-clearance table saw insert at a shop in Portland, is it worth fighting with thin plywood?
Stopped by a cabinet shop off 82nd Ave last week and the guy was ripping wobbly panels without any tearout, but he swore by a cheap DIY zero-clearance insert over a store-bought one, so which side are you on, buying a pre-cut plate or making your own from scrap?}

Skip the store-bought plate and just cut your own from 1/4 inch MDF. The DIY one takes ten minutes, fits your exact saw top, and costs nothing if you have scraps around. I've run both on my old Ridgid and the homemade one outlasted the pre-cut because you can make it thicker where needed. Are you planning to use it mostly for crosscuts on thin stuff, or ripping long panels too?

The last MDF plate I cut ended up slightly trapezoid, so my saw now has a built-in wedge feature, which is great if I ever need to cut crown molding at two angles at once. But honestly, I'd still do it again over paying for the store one.
