Serious question, did I get took on a $180 laser level from a booth at the state fair?

I picked up a laser level at a vendor booth during the state fair in Springfield three weeks ago because the guy did a slick demo on a crooked table. He said it was a $300 unit marked down for the fair, and I paid $180 cash on the spot. Got it back to the shop and the beam drifts almost a quarter inch over 12 feet, which makes it useless for cabinet installs. Turns out the same no-name box sells online for about $60, so I basically paid triple for a demo and a handshake. The part that gets me is the vendor had no receipt, no card, just cash, so there is nothing to chase. Has anyone had luck with a warranty swap on one of these fair booth tools, or am I just eating this one?
