Tapered versus square legs on dining tables - did a 10-year resto and saw a clear winner
I just finished restoring this old oak dining table from the 1960s (my third full strip and refinish job). The original legs were these clunky square things that made the whole piece feel heavy and dated. On a whim I turned new tapered legs for it (same wood, same stain) and the difference is night and day. The room breathes now, you know? But I had a customer last month who specifically wanted blocky square legs for her farmhouse style. So which way do you all lean for a standard 6-person table? Does the room style really dictate that choice or is tapered just always the better look? I'm curious what other people see in their own projects.

Six legs on a farmhouse table and suddenly it's a bulked-up linebacker.

Honestly, "the room breathes now" really hit me. I get what you mean completely, it's wild how much a small change like that can open up a whole space.

And once you notice that, you start seeing it everywhere - how taking one dumb thing away can make everything less cramped.
