Trim nails vs screws for hanging cabinets and I will never go back to nails
I hung cabinets in a kitchen in Boise for 12 years using 16 gauge finish nails and always had a few that worked loose after a couple seasons. Two years ago I switched to 3 inch trim head screws with a small pilot hole and the difference is night and day. A cabinet box that used to shift a quarter inch now stays dead level, even in a house where the studs are bowed bad. The screws cost me about $40 more per kitchen but I save that back in zero callbacks. Nails are faster, sure, but faster does not matter when you are back at the same house six months later with shims in your pocket. My old partner still swears by his nailer and we argue about it every job. If you hang uppers for a living, what are you actually using these days, nails, screws, or a mix of both?
