Using a story pole for layout work saved me hours on my last build
The accuracy and speed increase was more than I expected.

You mentioned the speed increase was more than expected, but how serious are we talking? For a simple shed or deck, marking each stud individually doesn't take that long. Is hauling and aligning a perfect pole around the site really faster than a tape and a pencil for small jobs? It seems like a solution for a problem that isn't always a huge time sink, especially when a lot of layouts are forgiving if you're off a quarter inch.

Last summer I helped my cousin build a 10x12 shed using that pole method. I mean, we had all the studs marked in under 20 minutes, where before with a tape it would take us at least an hour. Idk, hauling the pole around felt less fussy than constantly bending down to measure and mark each spot. Maybe it's just me, but even on forgiving layouts, being off a quarter inch can stack up and cause headaches later. For small jobs, that time adds up, and you're done before you know it. So yeah, I'd say the speed increase is pretty serious, even for something like a deck.

Bailey.miles, from that 10x12 shed example, the story pole eliminates repetitive measuring and marking. You layout the entire wall's studs in one go, which is why it's faster than a tape for each location. The method's real strength is consistency, preventing those small errors that do compound over a project.

Honestly, Bailey's point about it being "a solution for a problem that isn't always a huge time sink" resonates with my younger self. I used to think exactly that until I built a garden shed and managed to compound a series of tiny tape measure errors. The door opening ended up so crooked I had to plane an inch off the jamb. My joke is that I built a custom shed for a custom door that doesn't exist. That experience sold me on the story pole, not just for speed but for eliminating the mental fatigue of constant remeasuring, where most of my stupid mistakes crept in.
