Serious question, does anyone else feel like downtown Phoenix got less walkable in the past 5 years, not more?
I keep hearing everyone in my circle say downtown Phoenix is finally becoming a real walkable city, and I just don't buy it. I pulled up a Maricopa Association of Governments count from 2019 and the sidewalk coverage on my 8 block stretch near Roosevelt Row hasn't moved at all, still about 60 percent of blocks have gaps wide enough to matter. I walk that route 4 mornings a week to get coffee and I still dodge the same dirt patches and the same 3 crosswalks with no signal. New apartment towers went up, sure, but they added 2 parking podiums for every storefront, so the street feels emptier at eye level. Maybe I am wrong about what counts as walkable, so what street in this city actually feels good to you on foot?
