That alley mural off 9th Street I laughed at for 6 months is now my favorite spot in town
When they painted that giant octopus on the brick wall behind the old hardware store on 9th, I thought it was the dumbest thing the city ever paid for. Me and my buddy drove past it every morning and cracked jokes about the tentacles looking like wet noodles. About 6 months back I started walking that way to get lunch and something shifted. The light hits those blues and oranges around 4pm in a way that stops you cold, and there's always someone standing there taking a picture or a kid pointing at it. Last Tuesday I sat on the curb for 20 minutes eating a sandwich just looking at the thing, and a guy from out of town asked me if I knew who painted it, like I was some kind of tour guide. So here's my question: do you think a city should keep paying for big public art that people hate at first, or is that money better spent on fixing sidewalks and streetlights? I'm honestly torn now because I was dead wrong about that wall and I don't know what else I've been wrong about.
