That hole-in-the-wall tamale spot on 24th in Oakland looked sketchy but I was wrong
I walked past this tiny stand with a hand painted sign near Fruitvale for like 8 months and always assumed it was a tourist trap with bad food. Last Saturday my neighbor dragged me there and the tamales were $3 each and better than anything I've had in the Bay. Now I'm wondering if I've been skipping hidden gems my whole life because of how a place looks from the outside. On the flip side, that fancy brunch spot on Grand Ave with the 45 minute wait served me cold eggs for $22. How do you all decide which sketchy spots are worth a shot and which ones to skip?
