The crosswalk button on 5th Ave that took me 6 months to understand

I kept pressing the button at 5th and Main every morning, waiting and waiting while traffic just kept rolling through. Then last Tuesday I noticed a tiny sign bolted to the pole that said the button only works during off peak hours, from 7 to 9 it's automatic. So I stood there for 6 months like an idiot mashing plastic for no reason, and now I just walk right out when the light changes. Anyone else got a city fixture they finally figured out after way too long?
