Kept a bulky armchair for 3 years before swapping it for a small reading nook

I had this oversized recliner from my uncle that took up a quarter of my living room in Austin. After staring at it every day, I finally traded it for a compact armless chair and a tiny side table from a local thrift shop for $40. The room feels twice as big now and I actually use the space to read instead of just dumping mail on it. Has anyone else held onto big furniture out of guilt and then felt way better after switching?

Kept a bulky couch from my grandma for years because I felt bad getting rid of it. Finally swapped it for a smaller loveseat and my apartment actually feels livable now. Worth the guilt

Yeah the "worth the guilt" part is the key. I kept my grandpa's old recliner for way too long cause of that same feeling but once I finally swapped it I realized he wouldn't want me to be uncomfortable. If you can, take a photo of the old couch before you get rid of it. That helped me feel like I still had something from them but didn't have to keep the actual furniture.

Wait, your grandma's couch? Like, she gave it to you herself and you still swapped it? That takes guts. I held onto my uncle's recliner for three years even though the fake leather was peeling off in weird strips and the springs were poking me in the back. Kept thinking he'd come visit and be offended or something. Finally swapped it for a wobbly little bookshelf chair from a garage sale and it was like, instant relief. The guilt faded way faster than I thought it would, and now I can walk through my living room without scraping a shin.
