My 3 drawer junk bin nearly cost me my passport, here's the wake up call

I keep a bin by the door for random stuff, keys, loose change, old receipts. Last Tuesday I was rushing to catch a 6am flight and my passport was nowhere. Found it under a pile of takeout menus in that bin after 20 minutes of panic. That's when I realized I wasn't decluttering, I was just hiding things in a bigger mess. Anyone else have a 'catch all' spot that turned into a black hole?

That catch-all bin is a trap. What fixed it for me was giving every single thing in there a home, even if that home was the trash. Now the bin only has three slots, one for keys, one for mail, one for nothing else.
