My mom was right about that stupid 1-in-1-out rule

A few months ago my mom told me to try the 1-in-1-out rule for every new thing I bought. I thought she was just nagging like usual. But I finally gave it a shot last month after buying a new frying pan. Turns out having to pick something to donate each time really makes you think twice before grabbing stuff at Target. I got rid of 15 things in January alone. Has anyone else had success with a rule they thought was dumb at first?

Your roommate kinda missed the point, the rule is supposed to make you think before you buy not just swap things out like a revolving door. Maybe try it with a 24 hour waiting period before you actually donate anything, that way you don't panic and toss stuff you still need.

Funny enough my roommate tried this last year and it backfired spectacularly. She got rid of fifteen pairs of shoes to make room for new ones, then realized three of those were her only comfortable work shoes. Ended up buying them back from Goodwill two weeks later. She still swears by the rule but now she just hides stuff in her trunk instead of actually donating it. So maybe start with the things you're 100 percent sure about before getting carried away.

Trunk method is honestly genius. Might borrow that one.
