My 'quick' paper shred session turned into a four hour project

I figured clearing old bank statements from a single drawer would take maybe an hour. Wrong. I found a box of my kid's elementary school art mixed in, and I couldn't just toss it. Sorting what to keep, what to photograph, and what to let go took forever. The shredder overheated twice, and I had to hand-tear a bunch of the thicker construction paper. What should have been a simple job ended at midnight. Anyone have a better system for mixed sentimental and boring paper clutter?

Ever think about just keeping one folder per kid and when it's full, you have to swap something out?

That's a solid plan, @nathan901, but scanning like nancyj11 said saved my sanity.

Try scanning the sentimental stuff to clear space faster.
