My sister said one thing about my kitchen clutter that hit different

She came over last Tuesday and looked at my pile of random coffee mugs I keep just because, and said 'you're not holding onto these, you're holding onto who you used to be.' That really got me thinking about why I keep stuff that doesn't even fit my life anymore. Has anyone else had a relative say something that made you look at your stuff differently?

...and then it kinda hits you that this whole thing isn't just about the mugs, it's about how we get stuck in patterns all the time without noticing. Like you keep the same old routines or even hang out with the same people out of habit long after they stop fitting who you are now... your sister just nailed that feeling with a kitchen counter.

Saw a thing online about how habits are basically your brain being lazy on purpose. Something like the brain uses 20% of your energy without you even thinking about it. So when you keep those same mugs or same friends, it's not that you're weak, it's that your brain is trying to save fuel. The real kicker is noticing when that fuel savings isn't worth the cost anymore. Your sister's cup story hit that weird spot between comfort and being stuck.

Yeah I had a similar wake up call a few years back with an old coffee shop I went to every morning. It took me way too long to realize the coffee was actually pretty bad and the wifi was spotty but I kept going because it was familiar. Took a week of forcing myself to try different places before I found one that actually worked better. Your mileage may vary but sometimes you gotta break the routine just to see if it still fits you.
