Question about keeping sentimental items vs. letting them go

I used to keep every birthday card my mom gave me, thinking I'd want to look back at them someday. But after 15 years and three moves, that shoebox full of cards just sat in my closet collecting dust. Last month I tossed all but two of them, and honestly I don't miss the rest. How do you decide what's worth holding onto from family?

My mom passed when I was 23 and my daughter was 2. I started writing down little things my mom used to say, like "measure twice, cut once" and how she always put a pinch of cinnamon in her coffee. I also scanned a bunch of old photos and put them in a Google Drive folder labeled "Grandma's stuff." When my kid asks now, I just pull up a picture or read one of those notes. It's not the same as her being here, but it gives my kid a real taste of who she was.

Is it really worth keeping if you never look at them? I tossed most of my old cards and don't regret it either. Memories aren't the same as clutter.
