Showerthought: my grandma's junk drawer taught me more about decluttering than any book ever did
I was cleaning out her kitchen after she moved to a home last spring and realized everything in that drawer had a specific purpose tied to a memory, not just random clutter, and now I ask myself 'would grandma keep this?' before tossing anything - has anyone else had a relative change how you approach stuff?

lmao the muffin tin thing is genius. I actually stole that but now I use an old ice cube tray for safety pins and spare buttons in my sewing drawer. The trick is you gotta set a reminder on your phone to go through it or else you end up with a collection of mystery keys and dead batteries like I did for two years straight lol.

My mom's junk drawer was a three tier system with bread ties, rubber bands wrapped around old playing cards, and twist ties from produce bags all sorted in a muffin tin. It made me realize there's a difference between hoarding and having a backup plan for small problems. Now I keep a similar setup with binder clips and extra keys in a tackle box, but I purge it every six months so it doesn't get crazy. That "would grandma keep this" test is surprisingly solid, I use it on my tool bench all the time.
