That moment my vacuum cleaner ate a sock and died on me Tuesday
I was just trying to clean up the living room after my kid spilled popcorn everywhere, and somehow a sock got sucked into the vacuum. It made this horrible grinding noise and then just stopped working completely. I spent 20 minutes pulling out shredded sock bits and lint, but the motor smells like burnt plastic now. Has anyone else had a vacuum die from something dumb like this? Any recommendations for a decent one under $150?

Start by checking the hose for blockages before you trash it completely. A sock usually plugs the tube before it hits the motor, so that burnt smell might be from the belt slipping, not the motor itself. I had a cheap Hoover do the same thing, pulled a kid's hair ribbon out of the hose, replaced the belt for 8 bucks, and it ran fine for two more years. Did you actually take the hose off and look through it with a flashlight, or just dig around the brush roll?

My old Dyson ate a shoelace the same way last year, made that exact grinding sound and then the motor just gave up. Burnt plastic smell is the worst because you know it's toast at that point. For under $150, I'd check out the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser, it handled my messes way better and actually survived a sock incident so far. But honestly, if you can stretch a bit, the Shark Navigator has been a tank for me, sucked up everything from kids toys to random socks without dying.
