Warning: I chose the wrong storage unit size and paid for it twice

I had to decide between a 10x10 and a 10x15 unit when I moved my late mom's things out of her house last month. I figured I could save $60 a month by going smaller. But after 3 hours of stacking boxes in that cramped space, I realized I was going to need a second unit. Now I'm paying $150 total per month because I wanted to save $60. Has anyone else made this mistake and found a better way to estimate what size you actually need?

My friend actually told me she measured the cubic feet of her stuff before renting and that saved her. She used the "storage calculator" thing on some websites and went up one size from what it suggested just to be safe. If you have a rough idea of how many boxes and big furniture pieces you have, you can even sketch out a floor plan on graph paper to see if it all fits before you commit.

Read somewhere you can stack bins by weight too, keeps boxes from crushing.

The graph paper idea is genius, I wish I'd done that. I went through the same thing last year trying to stuff a couch into a unit that was clearly too small and ended up needing a second one just like you.
