A quick chat with my dad about caulking changed my whole approach

He was over last weekend helping me seal up some windows, and he just casually said "you're putting it on too thick, you're just gonna have to scrape it off later." I'd been doing it that way for 10 years lol, never even thought about it. Has anyone else had a super simple tip from a parent that totally changed how you do a project?

My dad says the same thing to me every time I'm caulking and I always tell him I like a little extra because it gives me something to smooth out. Different strokes I guess. Sometimes I'd rather have too much and sand it down than have a gap I didn't fill. I get where he's coming from but I've had too many projects where I went too thin and regretted it later.

Question is, does it really matter that much in the long run? Caulking's not brain surgery, you know. If you go a little heavy and have to sand it down, big deal, you spend an extra fifteen minutes. But running a bead so thin you end up with a drafty window or water getting in? That's a real headache later. Seems like folks get way too worked up about something that's mostly just a matter of preference and common sense.

Right? "You're putting it on too thick" is basically the dad version of "you're holding it wrong." I'd rather sand down a little extra than play the "is this gap gonna let a bug in" guessing game later.
